A k a day in Lima Peru (Day 5)

Another wasted day waiting for the elusive internet man to bring us high speed joy and unlimited connectivity at break neck speed. Such are the trials of life in Lima. I am disappointed but not complaining because there are so many people who would just love to be in the position we are. So, instead I am choosing to be thankful that I am in the position to be moaning about it.

And so day 5 began. Like most of the others the sun broke through fairly early and it has been beautiful since. A quick (relatively) jaunt into town for Nicola to deal with an appointment and then back for lunch. Driving is definitely not a pleasure in Lima.

Mindful of the need to rack up another 5k we set of towards the Jockey Plaza shopping mall. I wanted to pick up a couple of bits of wood for a project so we headed north this time a short distance parallel to the Pan Americano.

Jockey Plaza is one of Lima's most modern and large shopping Malls. You could be in any city in the world inside.

On route we passed a small religious statue. There are lots of them in Peru and they are very religious people. They take care of their statues and this one has a wee fence and some recently added real flowers. Meanwhile the Pan Americano thunders past in the background.

Yesterday Lesley asked about the water supply in Lima since it never rains and she wondered how they keep things looking so green and lush. Perhaps surprisingly there is no water shortage whatsoever. The greenery is watered regularly by big tankers but the city lies on a network of rivers that are all carefully directed underground in natural and man made channels. The pictures below show the path we walked up and then between the cracks in one of the sections you can see the water streaming below the path. So you are literally walking up the river.
I was struggling a bit to gather pictures because today's route was rather devoid of interesting things. I did manage to take this one though. You can just see my toe peeping into the frame. That is the same toe that moments later would catch the sticky up unevenness that is Lima's roads and paths and boom. I went headlong down in a heap my phone flying to the roadway in a crack. Sheila rushed and I heard her say "are you alright" and I was just about to answer when I realised she was talking to the phone ha ha. Skinned knee, skinned elbow, big lump on knee but it is the ego that took the biggest battering. What a plonker Rodney. The phone, by the way, also escaped largely unscathed.

Eating out in Lima (pre-pandemic) was legendary and one of the most interesting places is YOY Box Park. All of the restaurant units are made out of shipping containers. It was closed as we passed and I am not sure if it is functioning again yet or not. One of the attractions is that you can choose your food from any of the units and take it to a table which is then hoisted 100ft (30m) into the air to give you a birds eye view whilst dining.
The next two pictures are inside YOY.
The sun is slowly setting on day 5 of our challenge. We have racked up over 25km and are determined to see this through to the end despite the ups and literal downs!!! Here is today's Strava. If you are still reading this I thank you for your patience. I will try to bring you an interesting but injury free adventure for tomorrow.

Take care all
Lima over and out.
